The Blue Peter Appeal 1994 was the Blue Peter Appeal for the year 1994 which aimed to provide wells.

Aims[]

The idea for this appeal came from presenter Diane-Louise Jordan, who opened her water bill one morning and read the flyer that fell out. It was from the charity Wateraid, who provide clean water and sanitation to people in developing countries. Just six weeks later, Diane was flying to India to report on the great need for Wateraid's work, and on what it is like to live with your nearest water supply a three-mile walk away.

The appeal wanted to provide tube wells, drilling rigs, locally-made handpumps, tools, cement and timber to provide clean drinking water and sanitation to rural communities in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The target was to provide 185 tube wells and to repair 393 old and damaged handpumps - to help a total of 166,000 people.

The programme needed to raise £350,000 and asked viewers to run Bring & Buy Sales.

Results[]

On January 9th 1995, the appeal passed the second target - £850,000 raised to provide clean water. The extra money allows Wateraid to build 1,649 tube wells and 8,350 hygenic loos in 825 villages across India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. It will take several years to do all the work, and Wateriad have told us that the money allows more people to have clean water far sooner than was thought possible.

By April 20th, 1995, a total of £1,568,806 had been banked for the Well Water Appeal.
